Such a pretty girl, the boy is so handsome; how could something like this happen? While Triston Francis has not been found guilty of having killed budding beauty queen Alisha Hunt, comments following her murder has reflected the usual shock in coming to terms when such heinous acts involve pretty people particularly as perpetrators.
As Alisha’s broken mother attests, nothing’s written on anybody’s face. Yet we always seem to associate such actions with physical ugliness.
In the quest for beauty and the desire to neatly demarcate good and evil, we nurture our psyche with fairy stories of old evil queens and hulking monsters, lulling ourselves into believing that evil has a face, and it is ugly.
Sadly, as many studies of psychopaths show, those with the least conscience and empathy can often be the greatest charmers; the most beautiful ones; the ones who sweeten us into making excuses for their self-serving, anti-social behaviour. From the “spoilt” child to the demanding co-worker, we placate them every day, allowing them to have their way. We clothe the beast under the bright smile in harmless names yet still avoid upsetting it.
But whether it’s a case of a deep-seated evil, a long-standing psychological problem or a sudden psychotic break, the signs and symptoms lie not in how handsome the face or how pretty the smile, but in the actions, sometimes subtle, that hint or shout, that something is very wrong.
We could make sure that a life, like Alisha’s is not lost in vain. It’s not enough to lament it after the fact but instead we should be aware of the psychopaths in our midsts. Sometimes we must overcome the fear of retaliation, put aside the love, forget the pride, damn the family name and the million little things that prevent us from admitting when something is wrong. Whether it’s anger management or medication, that person themselves may never realise they need help unless someone raises the red flag and insists they seek help. Sometimes the very thing we fear, becomes reality because of our inaction.

Today, Saturday, April 2, over thirty people will seek to complete a three-part certification course in judging calypso and soca art forms. “Today is the real test. We will be doing simulation exercises, to see how people interpret what they see and relate it to the marking scheme that we’re using,” says long-time judge Rudolph Ottley, who is conducting the course. Ottley heads the all-female Divas Calypso Tent in Trinidad and has been a calypso judge since 1991.
The full day session at the Palm Haven Hotel follows evening sessions on Thursday and Friday.
Organised by the Saint Lucia Calypso Association 2009 (SLCA) and accredited by the University of the West Indies (UWI), the course represents efforts to take the art form to new levels in Saint Lucia. “This is the first time, I’ve done (the course), with UWI,” explains Ottley, who also facilitates an annual course in Trinidad.

Trinidad's Rudolph Ottley - calypso & soca juding facilitator

The comprehensive course includes history of calypso and soca, the difference between the two artforms, and dissection of the judging criterion for each area, among other topics.
Ottley is heartened by the quality of individuals at the sessions and says judges should have a grasp of both music and language. “Calypso is a package. Lyrics is the storyline but you carry the story with music.”
The accredited training is offered free of charge, with the only catch being that participants must make themselves available when called upon to judge calypso and soca competitions.
Ottley says SLCA should try to get as many people as possible, as it is important to rotate judges throughout the season. The final selection of judges will be done by the SLCA.

Automatic teller (ATM) and credit card machines have become so commonplace, that most rely heavily on them for reasons of security as well as convenience. From supermarkets to airport terminals, they are becoming almost innocuous.
But not, it seems, in Haiti.
Firstly ATMs are harder to find than banks (which are fewer since the January 2010 earthquake), and transactions are just as complicated. I got the first-hand experience when I travelled to Haiti with a group of CARICOM journalists.
A trip to an ATM in the heart of Port Au Prince, is reminiscent of the days of travellers cheques. Special tellers deal handle this transaction, which requires the presentation, and photocopying, of one’s passport, and then delivery of cash from a different teller.
Thankfully one is allowed to cut the line, which is a blessing as the bank line stretches to the sidewalk outside the bank, with customers being let in one at a time by heavily armed guards.
Transactions are also closely watched by guards, whose duties extend to preventing the use of mobile phones and electronics such as cameras, in the bank, as a security measure.
That Haitians still use the banks seem a credit to their resilience. Over one-third of the country’s ATMs are estimated to have been destroyed in the earthquake. However even before that it was estimated that less than 1 in 10 Haitians had ever used a commercial bank.
Despite this the Haitian Gourde, (Creole Goud) introduced in 1813, is healthy, compared to some other currencies. The rate of exchange is HTG 40 to $1US.
With the country’s economy on the upswing before the earthquake as traditional areas of commerce were resuscitated, and with the influx of money following the disaster, the currency remains strong.
Still Haiti is far from boasting easy access to savings or loans. It is certainly a far cry from the cash-free society most countries stand on the verge of. So if you prefer to use your ATM/credit/debit card, save it for another trip and get some cold hard cash before entering Haiti.

this crucial role is shared between local, regional and international observers.

Ambassador Colin Grandison, who heads the joint OAS/CARICOM observation mission confirms there are, “200 observers from CARICOM (Caribbean Community)
Latin America, North America. But we also have a high number of observers from Europe, as states such as France, Spain, Portugal are observer members of the OAS and also part of the joint observer mission.”
A core group of two persons has been on the ground in Haiti since October last year. Coordinators, who are in charge of different teams, came in about three weeks ago. Long term observers came in about a half before elections; followed by short term observers on March 16. “Short term observers are debriefed and leave the country immediately following elections. Long term observers stay longer”, says Ambassador Grandison, “Because we need them to do some of the follow-up in the electoral process.”
Preliminary election results are declared on March 31, and the final result on April 16.
In-between an electoral tribunal will adjudicate all complaints related to the elections process. The reports generated by observers help validate any election, which is important for the support of international community from which Haiti receives an estimated 80% of its budget. Observers have become an integral, though disputed, aspect of Haitian elections, since the first democratic election in 1991, due to the country’s history of dictatorship.
In addition to the multi-national observers the United Nations Security Council has a long established Stabilisation Mission (MINUSTAH) in Haiti. It has been in operation since 2004.
Officially there to support the political process and capacity-building of security and law-enforcement, MINUSTAH will provide logistical support during the election.
“Votes are not counted at the polling station. Results sheets are put into a clear envelope along with other documents. The envelope is sealed and all those envelopes from throughout the country, Some 33,000 results sheets, are brought to Port Au Prince. This is done by the peacekeeping mission.”

As the second round of presidential election is conducted in Haiti today Sunday, March 20, each step of the process is being watched and recorded for later examination. In this, the second round of voting in Haiti’s most recent election, this crucial role is shared between local, regional and international observers.
Despite the international presence however, elections remain plagued by violence and allegations of fraud. Grandison stresses that post-election reports are used to address inequities but says “Electoral processes are very complex. Many things can go wrong.”

Haiti is attempting to put it’s troubled past to rest as the country prepares for a March 28 run-off of the 2010 presidential elections. However spectres of the past have been raised with the return of former president Jean Betrand Aristide.
Despite the resurfacing of allegations of war crimes, the majority of the 4.7 million people registered are expected to vote, witt the focus will be on the two remaining presidential candidates, former first lady Mirlande Manigat, 70, and singer Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly. However 172 candidates will also contest 76 disputed seats.
All campaigning was stopped on Friday evening and the country was quiet this evening in the wake of Saturday’s bustle. This was in contrast to the scene Friday, March 19 as twice former president returned from exile.
There was a jubilant chaos in the streets as thousands of Haitians welcomed their beloved “Titid” with messages on t-shirts, banners and placards. “B’am papam (give me my father)”, they had asked, and finally he was home.
Waving flags in a carnival atmosphere, people walked and ran alongside cars, motocycles and over-crowded public transports, to Aristide’s home in Tabarr.
“The problem is exclusion. The solution is inclusion,” Aristide had said earlier in an address at Aeroport International Toussaint Louverture, where he was also greeted with adoration. With the nation and the world watching, the former president spoke in English, Zulu, Spanish, French and his native Creole, saying when he is away from Haiti, he cannot breathe.
While many of his comments were drawn from his Lavalas Party’s slogans, Aristide’s speech was far from divisive.
“The humiliation of one Haitian is the humiliation of all Haitians,” he repeated before stating, “our blood is the blood of Toussaint Louverture…we will not betray our blood.” He added the roots of freedom are deeply planted in Haiti.
Flanked by his wife, daughters and supporters, including American actor Danny Glover, Aristide stated his love for his homeland and his people, calling for unity and saying the people are the hope of Haiti.
Aristide’s return two days before presidential elections on caused little of the expected disruption. Although he appeared to hint at exclusion of his Fanmi Lavalas party, Aristide’s tone was one of conciliation. He noted the peaceful atmosphere in contrast to fears that his return could cause unrest.
While a smoke bomb was set off (allegedly by security forces) as supporters scaled the walls of Aristide’s residence on Friday, there was no violence.
Aristide’s gave no indication of his intentions but one highly placed observer feels his presence was precipitated by presidential campaigners. “They put him on the agenda by saying don’t come to Haiti. So he came to Haiti.” Aristide however, has simply stated that the role of a patriot is to love his country, whether in exile or at home.
The regional official noted, “If Aristide wanted to disrupt the election he could have stayed in Africa, made a comment and disrupted the election.”
A member of the Lavalas party concurred, “If Aristide speaks for either of the candidates, they will win. If he says don’t vote; no one will vote.”

WATER. If you haven’t bought bottled water yet I’m sorry, it becomes scarcer every day. Put out a bucket/drum to catch some rain water for use in baths, toilets, etc.

BLEACH. Use liberally in drinking water, bath water, dirty toilets, floors, countertops, bathrooms, dishwashing – It’s practically a cure all. Please don’t overdo, it’s a hazardous substance.

WET WIPES. Baby wipes, feminine wipes, make-up removing wipes. They can save you a lot of water. But don’t use the movie ‘Book of Eli’ as your guide; please use more than one wipe to clean your body – please.

HAND SANITIZER. Another water saver. Walk everywhere with one on you. With water scarce some people won’t even bother to wash their hands.

FEBREEZE. It may be a while before you can wash your clothes, bed sheets, etc. If they’re not too soiled a bit of Febreeze can work wonders. Also of great help for those who had to dry out mattresses, pillows, rugs etc. after the hurricane.

DISPOSABLE DISHES/UTENSILS. Preferably cardboard, not plastic, plates and cups. Plastic spoons. Knives and forks are not necessary; just more garbage to pile up when garbage collection is already uncertain. Use your hands.

UNDERWEAR. A whole new wardrobe is one way to ensure you have clean clothing but for those who can’t afford it at least get a few new boxers, some bras and panties, panties, panties. Take no chances.

DRY SHAMPOO. Shampoo hair with a bowll of water? Yes you can. Usually used by those with locks/braids, dry shampoo comes in handy in a drought. ind it in the hair product aisle.

Additional Tips

Don’t sweat. The harder you work, the more you sweat, the more you smell, the harder it is to get clean, and wipes are just not adequate in those instances. You need bleach water and that’s already scarce.

Recycle your water. Dish washing and bath water can be reused for flushing toilets or cleaning outside.

Sanitise garbage. With collection suspended garbage will pile up in your house. Double up bags if possible. Bleach bags or use insect spray on outside of bags to help reduce the smell and insect invasion.

There’s no shortcut for brushing your teeth/tongue. Just do it.

NB: drinking beer and alcohol does not help save water. Bathing together does not help save water. Please refrain from using these methods.

Please send in any additional tips you may have. They will be appreciated.

“If you like me in this position you can tape it. on your video phone!”

Have you seen my porn video? You know, like that hot Beyonce song, “You want me naked? If you liking this position you can tape it. On your video phone“. Haven’t seen it? Well neither have I; but I’m so scared it’s out there.
Even before all this technology, men would find ways to expose who/what they were doing. Usually women would not appreciate a boastful or vengeful lover exposing them with stories, photos or video. But now for more women its, “Tape me on your video phone, I can handle you. Watch me on your video phone“.
Unfortunately, while the males end up on top, these females get the short end and find that maybe they can’t “handle it” as society comes down hard on them.
But cameras don’t shoot people. People shoot people. And before we salivate over the next video and gleefully forward it, we should turn the camera to take a good look at ourselves first. Are we really better than them? If we were we would show compassion like the Christ we claim to follow instead of passing harsh judgement before we know anything about the people involved.
Whether we use technology to walk on the moon or wallow in the filth of porn and violence depends not only on individuals and the society in which they function. Our single parent 3-11 tourism industry society is riddled with cross-cultural values.
If it takes a village to raise a child then in our Lucian village children are raised by violent lyrics in school buses, by Jerry Springer, soaps and music videos, by neighbours who ignore or insult them, by teachers who are frustrated, by aunts who abuse, by uncles who prey, by parents who leave them to the village because “money have to make”, by their peers who give all the time and (mis)information they need.
So instead of asking “Wat causing dat for you?” We decide these people are just nasty; let’s take the camera phones away so our children don’t see it and we’ll have one less porn to do a next on.
Instead of finding and treating the cause we eliminate a symptom.
Are we satisfied to just see no evil?
Shouldn’t we instead look to combat the multiplicity of negative influences that shape our children? Because arming your child with every caution will only be this effective against the arsenal of negative peer and adult pressure they face out there.
Sometimes we must mind other people’s business in order for ours to prosper. There must be laws restricting certain songs on public radio not just rules restricting them in our homes. We must ensure the law punishes those who provide alcohol to minors so children will not buy what you keep from them at home. We must call our elected representatives to demand stiff penalties not only for illegal guns and major drug dealing but for statutory rape, incest and spousal abuse as well, because those damaged people are the ones interacting with you, and your children.
Saint Lucia draw the line, and keep calling for it to be reinforced because if we continue to let the little things slide we won’t need YouTube or a videophone to see the consequences.

“This is not a Masai (African tribe)belief,” he said, almost laughing, “this life after you die. After you die you are nothing. You return to the soil, that is all.”
“What do you say Francis?” Mauro asked.
Francis had been reading a small red bound Bible. He looked up now and smiled. “These Masai are brave men,” he said. (From Barack Obama’s DREAMS FROM MY FATHER)

The way we live and die is a consequence of our beliefs. Where do we go when we die? Heaven? Hell? Nowhere? Is there anything we can do to affect what happens to us after death? Is there anything we can do to better our lives tomorrow?
The murder of Corporal Vincent Trevor Peters during a bold faced attack in February has upped the ante on violent crime. However, instead of trying to determine the root causes of crime and reasons behind the recent escalation in violence here, we have reached for the same cruel cattle prods – kill them, let them kill each other, bring back the cat-o-nine, fire somebody.
That Saint Lucians are still psychologically underdeveloped is made brilliantly clear in the simplistic solutions put forward by the general public. We have not even mastered the proper construct to develop productive moral citizens – family and social structures that instil values of self worth and social responsibility above all else and set barriers to crime with clearly defined consequences that are enforced without fear or favour.
Are we born with a sense of self worth or is it instilled in us by our family and/or society? Was every man and woman born knowing they have the capacity to achieve anything? Does every person have a real consciousness of the repercussions of their actions on individuals and society? What makes one boy believe he can become prime minister or priest and another boy believe his only options are Bordelais or the grave? If our society continues to ignore these and similar questions and advocate mindless killing as a solution to crime, then we will continue to produce killers in greater and greater numbers.
Does death hold any threat for a man to whom life holds no promise?
The solution/s to halting our headlong tilt toward the law of the jungle, lies in opening our eyes to the belief system, the word and the deed, that has produced this kind of mindless, heartless criminal.
And as we deify the victim, who deserves every accolade lavished on him, let us spare a thought for the criminal and others like him languishing at BTC and Bordelais or taking the sticks and stones of abusive homes and uncaring neighbours with false bravado; boys who may live their entire lives without one word of praise or commendation except from the fellas on the block who will give them their own 21 gun salute; boys whose bravado soon curdles like stale milk and hardens.
There but for the grace of my mother, go I.

If you didn’t experience at least one night of the Word Alive Literary Festival this past weekend, you have deprived yourself of an opportunity to be immersed in a celebration of creativity, an excess of artistic expression with roots in Saint Lucia and the Caribbean, a brilliant prism of the past, present and future; and some fantastic entertainment to boot.
A four night, three-day callaloo of international drama that included spoken word, literature, film, music and theatre, Word Alive 2010 graduated from its humble beginning as a poetry slam at La Place Carenage, to a proper arts festival, albeit in the fledging stage.
The festival opened on Thursday March 25 with ‘White Egrets’, the latest work by Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott taking off with a reading and book signing. The international launch here just days after the book’s release was as unexpected as the work from the 80-year-old poet, who had previously indicated that he had written his last line.
Professor Emeritus and Walcott scholar Edward Baugh introduced the work as familiar, reworked, tuned to new nuances yet featuring Walcott’s recurring obsessions, while noting that Walcott still can astonish and applauding the poet’s undiminished excellence.
The festival cut to a two-day film conference featuring Saint Lucian film maker Davina Lee, with support from PACE, on Friday and Saturday, with viewings of two scintillating regional films.
The jewel of the festival, the Word Alive spoken word contest, saw fresh Saint Lucian voices competing against the backdrop of acclaimed regional artistes.
Sunday was almost gluttonous with a brimming platter of eclectic writers and performers who took turns on-stage throughout the day. The re-staging of director Drenia Frederick’s interpretation of The Coloured Museum was a turbulent journey through many of the weekend’s themes – black history, identity, progress, religion and creativity.
Although festival producer and master of multi-tasking Adrian Augier declared Word Alive open on Thursday, was actively involved throughout the four days and took the last curtain call as part of the cast of The Coloured Museum on Sunday night, it was clear this was no one-man-show. The supporting cast of writers, performers, thespians and artists, the crew and the team from the Saint Lucia Arts Festival Company must be applauded for presenting this coubouyon of artistic excellence to Saint Lucians. Next year hopefully many more of us, particularly from the education system, will applaud in appreciation, having ourselves tasted of this artistic feast, which in the words of Augier, are beyond bananas and bacchanal.
